An old Hawaiian legend tells us of a child, Haloa, who was born deformed. The parents, Father Heaven, Wakea, and Daughter Earth, Papahanaumoku, planted this deformed child beside their house. They bore a second child, also named Haloa, who grew healthy and strong. Forever more, Haloa was to look after and respect his elder brother, the root of life, who provided nutrients for his growth. In return, elder Haloa was to continuously sustain enough nutrients for Kanaka.
We have been planting Taro for 10 years. It became a very important staple on the farm because it is an incredible sourse of calcium for us. Consuming calcium from vegetarian sources is much stronger than calcium from animal products. It makes our family stong and provides nutrients to those who are sick. Wheather it is making Poi, baby food, stir fry's or burgers, we find many ways to consume Taro.
